Scientists have learned to predict hidden eruptions of quiet volcanoes

Before they erupt, many volcanoes show obvious signs of activity: the earth's surface changes shape, underground vibrations are recorded. This is due to the fact that magma and associated gases fill the cavities located underground.
A magma chamber is an underground space where molten rock (magma) accumulates before an eruption. If there is a significant accumulation of magma and thermal energy, a volcano can suddenly and powerfully erupt. However, there are also volcanoes with a “quiet” character, whose eruptions occur almost unnoticed.
Researchers have created a model that helps interpret and predict such hidden eruptions by analyzing the Veniaminov volcano in Alaska. Their findings were published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Earth Science.
"Despite advances in volcanic monitoring, some volcanoes still erupt without any obvious warning, raising the level of danger to people," said lead author of the study, Dr. Yuyu Li of the University of Illinois.
Volcanoes located near large population centers pose a particular threat. Dangerous zones include volcanoes in Mexico (Popocatepetl and Colima), Indonesia (Merapi), Colombia (Galeras), and Italy (Stromboli).
